STONE PIT CLOSE.

Dad always called the field behind the shop and barns The Hilly Field. Looking back through the old maps it used to be named "Stone Pit Close". A while back I had a conversation with a chap from Mears Ashby who had done a lot of history in the area. The hills and hollows were created from the excavation of ironstone to be used in building in the local area. The clay that came out we suspect went up to the settlement on the Mears Ashby/Wilby road to be used in making clay pots, bowls and the like.

It seemed fitting to name our Ploughman's after this field that has so much history.
